Tigers Stop Three-Game Skid at SMU
By Don Wade
Playing without the American Athletic Conference’s leading scorer, Jeremiah Martin, the University of Memphis defeated a shorthanded SMU team at Moody Coliseum, 70-67, on Wednesday, Feb. 14, as five Tigers scored in double figures.
Mike Parks Jr. led the Tigers with 17 points and Kareem Brewton, filling in at point guard for Martin, scored 16 points with six assists. Raynere Thornton finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Kyvon Davenport scored 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Jamal Johnson scored 10 points.
“Without Jeremiah Martin, that was a heck of an effort,” said Memphis coach Tubby Smith. “And any road win is a good win.”
Martin sat out with a hip injury. Memphis improved to 15-11 overall, 6-7 in the AAC; SMU is 15-11 and 5-8.
The Tigers knocked down 16-of-21 shots in the second half and went 6-of-9 on 3-pointers in the second half.
SMU got a career-high 33 points from Jahmal McMurray, who also made a school-record nine treys. The Mustangs were without Shake Milton because of a hand injury.
The Tigers finished 9-of-20 from distance for 45 percent. Memphis held SMU to 20 points in the first half and had a nine-point lead at the break.
Memphis plays at Tulane at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, and the game will be carried by ESPNU.
