One Alderman Upset, Two Re-Elected In Arlington Elections
By Bill Dries
Two Arlington aldermen were re-elected in municipal elections Thursday, Sept. 21, that were the only scheduled elections of 2017 in Shelby County politics. And a third incumbent alderman was upset by his challenger as an outgoing interim alderman was elected to the Arlington school board.
The Thursday, Sept. 21, Arlington elections drew a total of 1,112 voters – early and election day – for a turnout of 13.6 percent in the city of 8,150 voters.
The four aldermen seats and three school board seats on the ballot were for citywide positions. There are no district seats on either body.
Cheryl Pardue claimed the Alderman Position 2 seat by virtue of being unopposed at the filing deadline earlier this year. She is filling the seat held by interim alderman Hugh Lamar.
Lamar won the only contested race for school board of the three on the ballot Thursday defeating contender Jill Yelland.
With all 2 precincts reporting, the unofficial final returns for school board Position 3 were:
Lamar 566
Yelland 513
Scott Benjamin claimed the open Position 1 school board seat, running unopposed.
And incumbent school board member Dale Viox also ran unopposed for school board Position 5.
Incumbent Position 6 alderman Brian Thompson lost his re-election bid by 57 votes to challenger Jeremy Biggs.
With all 2 precincts reporting, the unofficial final returns in that race were:
Biggs 564
Thompson 507
Position 4 incumbent Oscar Brooks Sr. held off challengers Thomas D. Reyes and Marshal Veitenheime to win a new term of office.
The unofficial final returns were:
Brooks 585
Reyes 416
Veitenheime 36
Position 5 incumbent Harry McKee overcame challenger Mark Strausser.
The unofficial final returns were:
McKee 621
Strausser 471
The other two aldermen positions and the remaining two school board seats as well as the Arlington mayor’s office are on the ballot in 2019.
