EMPHASIS: Law Week
Law Week Honors Memphis' Legal Community
By Bill Dries
Law Week is a tradition that celebrates local legal professionals and continues the dialogue about law and justice issues in the Memphis community at large.
Our Law Week emphasis explores some of those issues in greater detail, including judicial criticism, litigation finance and the next generation of attorneys.
The Memphis Bar Association’s annual Law Week observance has changed over the years from parades and luncheons to public service projects and discussions about access to justice.
Activities for the 2017 Law Week include:
• Law Week Party & Trivia Night – This event will be held Thursday, April 27, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Railgarten, 2154 Central Ave. Members of the legal community are welcome to join this celebration of the legal profession. Trivia Night information can be found at memphisbar.org.
• Memorial Service – The annual memorial service, which honors attorneys and judges the profession has lost in the past year, will be held May 2 at noon at Calvary Episcopal, 102 N. Second St.
• The Juvenile Court Book Drive continues through May 5. The MBA’s Access to Justice and Law Week committees are collecting donations of hardback, paperback and coloring books (new or gently used) for Juvenile Court. Books should be appropriate for toddlers through age 8, although books for older children will also be accepted. In lieu of books, donations will be accepted to purchase books. Checks can be made payable to the Memphis Bar Foundation, in care of Anne Fritz, 145 Court Ave., suite 301, Memphis, TN 38103. Books can be donated at the Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave. (Division 9 of Circuit Court); the Memphis Bar Association, 145 Court Ave., suite 301; at the offices of Nahon, Saharovich & Trotz, 488 S. Mendenhall Road; or at any Memphis Bar Association event.
