D.J. Stephens Charged With Domestic Violence

D.J. Stephens, a former and popular University of Memphis basketball player who was released by the Memphis Grizzlies this week before the start of the NBA season, has been arrested on domestic violence charges.

The Commercial Appeal reported that Stephens was arrested in connection with an incident involving the mother of his child. Citing an arrest affidavit, the CA said the incident occurred Monday at 5:45 p.m. outside a home in the 6900 block of Waters Bend Cove.

The woman told police that while arguing with Stephens, he grabbed her and pushed her to the ground several times. She told police she called 911 and was taken to Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital.

Police interviewed her at the hospital and she said she had a cut lip, a swollen eye, and multiple cuts and scratches, according to the CA.

Charged with domestic aggravated assault, Stephens will have a court appearance Friday for a video arraignment. No bond had been set and he remained in jail, according to the report.

Former FESJC Tournament Director Phil Cannon Dies

Phil Cannon, who served as tournament director of the FedEx St. Jude Classic from 1999-2015, died on Wednesday, Oct. 26, after battling cancer for more than two years. He was 63.

Current tournament director Darrell Smith said in a statement: “When Phil was diagnosed he said he would fight this battle with grace, courage, dignity and a big dose of humor, and I know all who have crossed paths with him can attest to that.

“Phil often said the tournament was far bigger than one individual, but I can confidently say Phil Cannon made an unbelievable impact on the FedEx St. Jude Classic.”

Cannon started volunteering at the local PGA Tour stop when he was 14 years old and was a student at White Station High School. It turned into a lifetime commitment of serving the tournament.

In 2015, as he prepared for what would be his last tournament as director, he smiled as he told The Daily News: “I don’t play golf. But I’d submit to you a music producer doesn’t sing or play guitar, either.”

LeMoyne-Owen Partners With UTHSC on New Project

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and LeMoyne-Owen College are partnering on a project aimed at getting more minority students interested in studying developmental disabilities.

The partnership between the UT Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities, a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at UTHSC, and LeMoyne-Owen is funded by a $40,000, one-year grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living.

With the project, the Boling Center and LeMoyne-Owen hope to generate more African-American interest, develop more opportunities for people with disabilities, promote cultural competence in the disability field, and enhance the skills of faculty to deliver timely and culturally competent training and services to the students they serve.

“The Boling Center is very pleased to partner with LeMoyne-Owen College to bring together a diverse group of faculty, students and administrators to broaden career interests, knowledge base and cultural competence within the field of developmental disabilities,” said Bruce Keisling, associate director of the Boling Center and principal investigator for the grant. “The objective is to create a sustainable partnership with a historically black college or university to serve as a pipeline for minority student recruitment, training in the disability field, and enhancing the cultural competency of all participants.”

Dixon Hughes Goodman Adds Sales Tax Practice Leader

Accounting firm Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP has added a veteran of International Paper Co. as sales tax practice leader for its Memphis tax advisory practice.

Julie Bragg joins DHG after 26 years with IP, most recently as the director of SALT Credits and Incentives and previously as director of Sales, Use and Property Taxes. Her background includes dealing with issues surrounding mergers and acquisitions and how they impact transactional taxes.

Bragg will work closely with DHG tax partner Giles Sutton and the Memphis tax advisory team to lead a full-service sales tax practice helping clients in all jurisdictions.

Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Offering Version of ‘Scrooge’

Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group in Memphis will have its own adaptation of the Christmas classic “Scrooge” this December.

The multicultural and bilingual play is called “Tio Pancho: A Christmas Story.”

The play will be presented on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at TheatreWorks, 2085 Monroe Ave.

CBU Health Care MBA Named Top 20 Program

The Healthcare Master of Business Administration (HCMBA) at Christian Brothers University was named one of the Top 20 Graduate Programs in Healthcare Management in the South in 2016 by Healthcare Management Degree Guide

The guide is an annual list released by the nonprofit ranking organization.

The accolade follows recognition by US News and World Report, which ranked CBU as the 27th Best Southern Regional University and Ninth Best Value School.

While the university has offered a traditional MBA program since 1989, the HCMBA program was added this year to meet the needs of working health care professionals in Memphis. The HCMBA program employs mostly adjunct instructors who work in the field that they teach, including managers from Methodist Healthcare, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, My Health Choice, FedEx Corp., St. Francis Healthcare and Medtronic.

CBU’s MBA programs are designed for working adults and meet only one night a week. In both MBA programs – a more traditional Cohort-MBA program (CMBA) and the HCMBA – all courses are focused on management in the health care industry. Both programs are structured so that students take one 8-week class at a time, with 12 weeks of breaks built into the calendar year.

Huey’s Temporarily Closing Southwind Store for Upgrades

Huey’s Southwind, at 7825 Winchester Road, is closing its doors for at least a week starting Oct. 31 to complete upgrades.

Among those fixes, the bathrooms will be renovated with things like new tile walls, floors, lighting, partitions and fixtures. Huey’s will also move ice bins to allow for additional inside seating, update the kitchen and bar flooring, make room for additional bar seating and add new paint to the interior, among other things.

New TVs are also being added inside and on the patio.

Saint Francis-Memphis Brings in New COO

Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis has tapped Samuel Pieh as its new chief operations officer.

Pieh will oversee all operations for the hospital. He most recently was the chief operations officer at Detroit Medical Center Huron Valley - Sinai Hospital, a Tenet Healthcare facility in Commerce, Michigan. Before that, he was director of Vascular Service Lines and Rehabilitation for Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett.

Pieh has a doctorate of physical therapy from Temple University in Philadelphia and is board certified in healthcare management as a Fellow with American College of Healthcare Executives.
