Voter Registration Deadline is Tuesday

The deadline to register to vote in Tennessee in the Nov. 8 presidential general election is the end of the business day Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Those registering to vote must have their applications at the Shelby County Election Commission’s two locations – 150 Washington Ave. Downtown or 980 Nixon Drive in Shelby Farms – by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, or postmarked Oct. 11 if the applications are mailed in.

Downloadable applications are online at shelbyvote.com, but there is no online registration. The forms have to be printed out and submitted in person or mailed in. The website also has a way to check whether your address is current on voter registration records.

The election commission is encouraging Shelby County voters to cast their ballots during the early voting period, which runs Oct. 19-Nov. 5, in advance of the Nov. 8 Election Day.

The presidential general election tops a ballot that is the most popular election cycle in Shelby County and the only one that consistently draws more than half of the county’s voters to the polls.

Fast-Casual Restaurant Chain Expanding Into Memphis

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a fast-casual restaurant chain, is coming to the Memphis market. Franchise owner Tim Heeren recently applied for an $850,000 building permit at 825 N. Germantown Parkway in Cordova. He plans to raze an existing Pizza Hut and build up a 3,000-square-foot Freddy’s restaurant, the first in the Memphis market.

He’s aiming for construction to begin in November with a mid-February opening. The Cordova location will be the first of an eight- to 10-store expansion, Heeren said. He has purchased a site in Olive Branch at Goodman Road and U.S. 78, and he is also eyeing sites in Millington, Collierville and Midtown.

The Cordova location will employ between 60 and 80 people.

“The closest one is probably St. Louis … so the Memphis market was untouched at this point, so that’s what attracted us. It’s a great market to come in with a fast-casual design,” he said.

Memphis Grizzlies Sign Forward Vince Hunter

Memphis has signed forward Vince Hunter, who was a member of the Grizzlies’ 2016 NBA Summer League team in Las Vegas. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hunter (6-10, 208) appeared in five games (one start) and averaged 11.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.80 steals in 21.8 minutes while shooting 57.1 percent from the field.

The 22-year-old Detroit native began his professional career last season, joining the Sacramento Kings for training camp and splitting the season with the NBA Development League’s Reno Bighorns and Panathinaikos in Greece.

In Reno, he started all 32 of his games with the Bighorns and averaged 21.8 points, 11.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.00 steals and 1.53 blocks in 31.9 minutes while shooting 58.9 percent from the field. He represented the West in the 2016 NBA D-League All-Star Game and recorded 12 points and seven rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

Hunter went undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft following two seasons at the University of Texas-El Paso, where he was named 2014-15 First Team All-Conference USA as a sophomore and the 2013-14 C-USA Freshman of the Year.

The Grizzlies’ roster now stands at 20 players.

Chef Kelly English to Join Culinary Event in NOLA

Chef Kelly English of Restaurant Iris is joining the Emeril Lagasse Foundation’s sixth annual Boudin, Bourbon & Beer in New Orleans next month.

English is one of two Tennessee chefs and the only chef from Memphis participating in the annual culinary event, which has grown into one of the Gulf Coast’s top food and music festivals.

Boudin, Bourbon & Beer, set for Nov. 4, features more than 60 local and national chefs preparing their own styles of boudin sausage.

Guests will also enjoy open bars featuring a selection of craft beers, premium cocktails, fine wines, as well as cigars, a silent auction and merchandise from sponsors.

2016 Liberty Bowl to Honor Musicians The Commodores

The Commodores, a Grammy Award-winning group with seven No. 1 hits, have been selected for the 2016 AutoZone Liberty Bowl Outstanding Achievement Award.

Each year, the award is presented in recognition of excellence in the field of music and entertainment. The Commodores will be honored at the President’s Gala on Dec. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at The Peabody hotel, 149 Union Ave.

Memphis Sisters to Appear On ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’

Memphis “kidpreneurs” Madison Star and Mallory Iyana will pitch their body-care products to a panel of wealthy business owners and investors on this week’s episode of “Shark Tank”.

The sisters own Angels and Tomboys (angelsandtomboys.com), a tween-focused body-care company that creates lotions and body sprays that are natural, vegan-friendly and paraben-free. Angels and Tomboys’ products come in scents with names such as “Peanut Butter Jelly Time,” “Deep Fried Ice Cream” and “Monkey Farts.”

Star and Iyana were one of 100 selected entrepreneurs from over 45,000 entrepreneurs that submitted applications to pitch to the “sharks.” The sisters hope to dance their way into the sharks’ hearts as they pitch their idea through song and dance.

The sharks are a group of tough, self-made multimillionaire and billionaire tycoons who give budding entrepreneurs the chance to potentially secure lucrative business deals. They include Mark Cuban, owner and chairman of AXS TV and owner of the Dallas Mavericks; real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran; “Queen of QVC” Lori Greiner; technology innovator Robert Herjavec; fashion and branding expert Daymond John; and venture capitalist Kevin O’Leary.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity and what this may mean for our business,” said Madison Star, the older of the two sisters, in a statement. “We are proud to be an inspiration to girls everywhere and super-excited to represent our hometown of Memphis on the show.”
