The second annual On Location: Memphis Shorts Festival will kick off with a screening of live-action shorts Tuesday, July 5, at 7 p.m. at Hard Rock Cafe, 126 Beale St. At the end, the audience will vote on their favorites, with the winner granted access to the OL:M International Film & Music Festival in August. Overton Square’s Stars & Stripes 5K and Block Party will take place Saturday, July 2, in the square at Madison Avenue. The block party runs from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will include live music, mounted police, children’s activities and more. Admission is free and no reservations are required. Riverfront Fireworks Spectacular will take place Monday, July 4, at Mud Island River Park, 125 N. Front St. The park opens at 3 p.m., live music and children’s activities begin at 6 p.m., and the fireworks display will launch from the southern tip of Mud Island at 9:15 p.m. Visit memphisriverfront.com.

SCORE Memphis will host a workshop titled “Simple Steps for Starting Your Business” Tuesday, July 5, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Road. Learn the myths and realities of entrepreneurship, the components of business ownership, legal and financial considerations, and more. Cost is free. Register at memphis.org.

The Booksellers at Laurelwood will host “Ghosts of War” author Brad Taylor and special guest Mark Greaney for a discussion and signing Tuesday, July 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the bookstore, 387 Perkins Road Extended. Visit thebooksellersatlaurelwood.com.

Twilight Tuesday, Beale Street Landing’s free outdoor movie series, will feature “The Wizard of Oz” Tuesday, July 5, at 8:30 p.m. on the roof of Beale Street Landing, 251 Riverside Drive. Tennessee Department of Revenue will hold a free tax workshop for new businesses Thursday, July 7, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Renaissance Center’s Memphis Training Room, 555 Beale St. Tax specialists from local and state agencies will provide information and answer questions on complying with registration and tax requirements.
