Biden to Visit Memphis Next Week
By Bill Dries
Vice President Joe Biden will be in Memphis next week as one of several stops in three states to mark the seventh anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The stops in Memphis, New Orleans, and St. Paul, Minn., will be Wednesday, Feb. 17, and Thursday, Feb. 18, with more specific details to be released later.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the “stimulus package,” was the Obama administration’s $840 billion effort aimed at recovering from the worst economic downturn in America since the Great Depression.
It was federal funding for what were termed “shovel-ready” public projects that would put unemployed Americans to work as quickly as possible.
As vice president, Biden oversaw the implementation of the act.
Biden arrives in Tennessee as early voting is underway in advance of the March 1 Tennessee presidential primaries. Minnesota’s presidential caucuses also are March 1, while Louisiana’s primary is March 5.
The Democratic presidential primary between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has featured a recent move by both to tout accomplishments of outgoing President Barack Obama.
