Reader Insists Parking Solution Already Exists for Zoo
I just read a very well thought out and thorough letter (from Richard Smith, mediator in the Overton Park parking controversy) about the zoo parking issue. I have another way of looking at it.
The zoo actually has a massive surplus of parking, not a shortage. The zoo makes up to half a million dollars a year parking on the Overton Park Greensward. If it uses the massive surplus of available parking, it loses that money.
This massive surplus includes the Mid-South Fairgrounds, nearby vacant lots, nearby parking lots they can lease/rent (everybody else has been buying up those vacant lots), the Overton Square garage, and the neighborhood street parking itself. Solutions only work if you use them, and this is a choice, a choice directed by half a million dollars a year. It continues to choose to not use the already existing solution, while it adds a parking deck or whatever.
And don’t give me none of that shuttle service doesn’t work malarkey. It’s a position. It’s a lie. This works for major attractions and major airports all over the world where on-site parking does not exist. This whole distraction makes us out to be the stupidest city in the whole world.
This is a scam, nothing more. Stupidity is a distraction. So is this mediation. Intransigence and entitlement is the problem. Economics is the cause. It’s that half a million dollars a year shortfall behind the zoo’s and the city council’s parking scam.
