HOOVER, Ala. – Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said during his appearance at SEC Football Media Days on Thursday, July 16, he is favor of removing the Confederate battle emblem from Mississippi’s state flag, but was less emphatic when asked about the team nickname “Rebels.”

"It's time to move in a different direction with the state flag," Freeze said, adding that believes certain groups have “hijacked” the Confederate symbol and used it for “ill will” against others.

In regards to the team nickname of Rebels, Freeze said: “If that’s something that’s troublesome to others, I’m sure we would address it.”

The June 17 murder of nine people at an African-American church in Charleston, S.C., has rekindled debate about Mississippi's flag and other Confederate symbols. Freeze, who grew up in Mississippi, also said he understands the “great pride and heritage” people have for the state’s history.
