From George’s Automotive to Uncle Floyd’s Tires, Wheel and Auto Accessories, automotive-related businesses were prominent among the 5,361 business licenses issued by the Shelby County Clerk’s Office in 2013.
The licenses, which include both new and renewals, were down 2.9 percent from 5,520 issued in 2012, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.
Such fluctuations from year to year are typical. For example, the 5,520 business licenses issued in 2012 marked a 4 percent drop from 2011, when 5,751 licenses were filed in the county.
Ray Pohlman a vice president and spokesman for AutoZone, was not surprised that auto-related businesses showed up often among new and renewed licenses in 2013.
“There are 213 million vehicles – cars, light trucks, SUVs – in the American fleet,” Pohlman said. “And the average age of the vehicle on the road is now approaching 11 years. Before the recession, it was about nine and one-half years.
