Bowling for Who-Knows-What

On the day after Christmas, 1958, I turned 7. The next day, Ole Miss played Florida in the Gator Bowl. The only other bowl games then were Sugar, Orange, Rose, and Cotton – all played on New Year’s Day – plus Sun, Tangerine, and Bluegrass, played earlier. Eight in all.

The Bluegrass Bowl was played only once, in Louisville, Ky. (With a name like that, where else?) On game day (Dec. 23), tickets originally priced at $15 were going for a buck and a half.

The current bowl season is underway. Belatedly, as a public service, here are this season’s offerings:

Dec. 21:
Gildan New Mexico Bowl – Wash. St. v. Col. St. – Albuquerque
Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl – Fresno St. v. USC – Las Vegas
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl – Buffalo v. San Diego St. – Boise

Jan. 4:
BBVA Compass Bowl – Vanderbilt v. Houston – Birmingham

Jan. 5:
GoDaddy Bowl – Arkansas St. v. Ball St. – Mobile

Jan. 6:

Thirty-five in all. Get it? Wait a sec, it’s not a joke, is it?

For kickoff times, names of arenas, and states in which host cities are located, Google it. Ditto for ticket prices. A recent article noted the “average price” of a ticket for the BCS Championship Game is $1,833. But for $12-15, you could get in to the Texas, Independent or GoDaddy.

Happy bowling!
