As first reported by ESPN.com’s Jeff Goodman, forward Calvin Godfrey is coming to the University of Memphis as a transfer from Southern University.
The 6-9, 210-pound Godfrey averaged 13.1 points and 8.8 rebounds last season. He will be eligible immediately because of sanctions against Southern for poor APR scores.
Godfrey started his college career at Iowa State, but was dismissed for marijuana possession. Godfrey told Memphis Roar that he was interested in coming to Memphis two years ago while at Howard College in Texas, but with Shaq Goodwin in the picture it didn’t happen.
Now, of course, Goodwin is set to start for a third straight year in the Tigers’ frontcourt and sophomore Austin Nichols returns after starting as a freshman.
“I think where I’ll shine the most is in rebounding,” Godfrey told Memphis Roar’s Grant Milner. “I can rebound outside of my area, and it’s something I like to do. It’s fun to me.”
