The vote count should be quick once the polls close Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Arlington and Lakeland municipal elections.

Thursday is election day in Lakeland and Arlington, where voters will elect town commissioners and aldermen. Lakeland voters will also decide a three-way race for mayor.

There are only four polling places for voters.

The polling places are open Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Arlington United Methodist Church, Arlington Middle School, First Baptist Church of Lakeland and St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Arlington voters are deciding three races for aldermen, while Lakeland voters are deciding on one race for two seats on the Lakeland commission as well as a three-way race for Lakeland mayor.

The mayor’s race among incumbent Mayor Scott Carmichael, former Mayor Jim Bomprezzi and Shelby County Commissioner Wyatt Bunker is expected to fuel a higher turnout in Lakeland than in Arlington.

There are 14,276 voters between the two towns, according to July voter registration statistics from the Shelby County Election Commission. Arlington has 6,889 and Lakeland has 7,387.

The election is the first of 11 in Shelby County between now and Thanksgiving.

Voters in Arlington, Lakeland and the county’s four other suburban towns and cities return to the polls in early November to vote in school board races, kicking off the formation of municipal school districts.
