Southwest Booking Memphis Flights for November

By Bill Dries

Southwest Airlines will make the formal announcement Tuesday, May 7, but the long-sought, Dallas-based discount air carrier began booking Memphis flights online Monday evening, signaling the beginning of Southwest service at Memphis International Airport starting Nov. 3.

The airline's Memphis service features nonstop flights from Memphis to Houston, Orlando, Tampa, Baltimore and Chicago.

AirTran flights out of Memphis International were converted to the Southwest brand as connecting flights to main-line Southwest routes.

When that announcement was made in February, Memphis airport officials said – and Southwest executives later confirmed – that full-fledged Southwest service would begin in November, as the airline reconfigured its fleet in the wake of its May 2011 acquisition of AirTran Holdings Inc.

Southwest flights on the fully integrated network began last month.
