The Memphis-based movie chain has acquired a shuttered 10-screen movie theater and outdoor amphitheater in Oxford, Miss. It’s in Oxford Commons, a 480-acre mixed-use commercial, residential, hospitality and entertainment development in the North Mississippi town.

Malco also is acquiring the adjacent property in the Oxford Commons development so it can double the size of the building and convert it to a Family Entertainment Center, including a 26-lane bowling center, a bar and restaurant, and a game area featuring a laser maze and bumper cars.

The theater will be remodeled with new rocking chair seats, an upgraded sound system and new state-of-the-art digital projection. Because of the additional screens, Malco will show a range of independent, foreign and smaller films as well, in addition to showing concerts, operas, sporting events and live theater.

The theater portion of the development will open by Labor Day, and the rest of the center – which will employ about 100 people – will be completed next year. It’s Malco’s second Family Entertainment Center, joining the recently opened Premier Lanes and Family Entertainment Center in Gonzales, La.

Memphis-based Malco Theatres has acquired a shuttered 10-screen movie theater and outdoor amphitheater in Oxford, Miss. The company will remodel the theater and turn the complex into a Family Entertainment Center, including bowling center, bar and restaurant, and a game area.

In a statement about the project, Malco executive vice president of theater operations Jimmy Tashie said, “Malco is very excited about bringing a second state-of-the-art, all-digital cinema and family entertainment center to the Oxford community. The end product will be something the community will be very proud to have and enjoy for many years to come.”

Meanwhile, Malco recently finished a renovation of its Ridgeway theater in East Memphis that it’s now calling the Ridgeway Cinema Grill. It was formerly known as the Ridgeway Four Cinema. The company also is planning to open new locations in Olive Branch; Millington; Jackson, Tenn.; and Gonzales, La., in addition to several unannounced locations.

Malco is a fourth-generation, family-owned and operated business that will reach its 100th anniversary in 2015. The company operates more than 300 screens at 30 locations across the Mid-South, in addition to bowling centers in Louisiana.
