Rebekah McLain has joined Counterpart Communication Design as copywriter. In her new role, McLain will write copy for print and websites, with areas of expertise including higher education, security and disability law, neuropsychology and hospitality.

MCLAIN

Hometown: Mobile, Ala.

Education and work experience: Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and publication design, University of Baltimore, 2009; Bachelor of Arts in English, University of Alabama, 2003. I’ve pretty much worked every job there is: teaching college, waiting tables and bartending, administering and scoring IQ tests, walking dogs, drafting letters to administrative law judges.

Family: I might get a cat next year.

Favorite quote: “A ship in harbor is safe, but that’s why ships are built.” From a fortune cookie.

Favorite movie: I don’t really have one. I could watch the BBC’s “Pride and Prejudice” miniseries every day though.

The sports team(s) you root for: Alabama Crimson Tide, Baltimore Orioles

What’s playing on your stereo right now? A mix called “Rebekah Moved to Memphis” that my friend/former upstairs neighbor from Baltimore made for me. He used to slide them under my door. Now they come via Dropbox.

Activities you enjoy outside of work: Road trips to Florida, swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, rock climbing and reading, of course.

What talent do you wish you had? I wish I weren’t so easily distracted.

Who has had the greatest influence on you? Everyone I’ve ever met has taught me one thing or another.

What attracted you to Counterpart? Counterpart’s warm and friendly personality. So many online job postings read as if someone were slapping you in the face with a dead fish. Counterpart’s posting made me feel like someone had just shoved a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie in my mouth.

What are your goals in your new position? I have a lot to learn. My goal is to soak up knowledge like a crazy knowledge sponge.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment? I saved up a bunch of money and quit my job(s) so I could find a job I really enjoyed. And I did.

What do you most enjoy about your work? Writing. I didn’t realize that it was possible to actually really, really like a job. But all I ever want to do is learn about things and then write about them. Now that’s my job. I also like collaborating with my coworkers. Everybody’s brain works differently, and I love to see that in action.

If you could give one piece of advice to young people, what would it be? Mind over matter – if you stay positive and focused, you can make anything happen.
