A new Memphis-based regional air carrier announced Thursday, April 4, that it will begin daily service May 21 at Memphis International Airport with routes covering eight Southern cities and five of the cities served non-stop from the Memphis area.

Southern Airways Express executives are not announcing the routes until later this month.

The company’s chairman and CEO is Stan Little, a Hernando, Miss., attorney.

“We saw a need for nonstop travel in the South without having to change planes in Atlanta, Dallas or Charlotte,” Little said in a statement. “A one-hour flight from Memphis to Birmingham, for example, can be four or five hours if you have to connect. With Southern it would be 90 minutes door to door.”

Southern, which will have its headquarters in Memphis, intends to fly out of and into private “executive” airports with planes that fly no more than 10 people per flight. That will mean no TSA security checkpoints.

Southern won’t charge baggage fees for checked baggage or carry-ons.
