Lone Star Demolition Begins Thursday
By Bill Dries
The city of Memphis begins demolition Thursday, Sept. 20, of the Lone Star Industries cement terminal at the foot of Poplar Avenue.
The city of Memphis bought the property for $10 million as part of city plans for redevelopment of the area around The Pyramid which is being converted to a Bass Pro Shops super store with other attractions in and around The Pyramid.
Lone Star Industries Inc., which is part of Buzzi Unicem USA, has since moved what it was doing near the south side of The Pyramid to a distribution terminal on Presidents Island where the company already had a presence.
City plans for the acreage include a park-like setting beneath the interstate ramps that along with the Lone Star silos are the dominant feature of the area between The Pyramid and Jefferson Davis Park.
Past city administrations dating back at least to Mayor Dick Hackett had considered buying the riverfront site amidst various plans to convert the riverfront and move it away from its past industrial uses.
