Melissa Thomson has been promoted to account manager from account executive at RedRover Sales & Marketing. In her expanded role, Thomson serves as a fractional chief marketing officer for growing Mid-South companies by conducting critical market research then creating and executing marketing strategies.

Hometown: Grew up in Walls, Miss., live in Southaven now.

Work experience: Previously served as chief operating officer and vice president of business development for Solis Energy Solutions; national marketing and business development manager for ULTA Beauty; regional marketing manager for Ratner Cos.; and marketing manager for NBC Capital Markets.

Family: All of my family still lives in the Memphis area – parents, brother, sister and grandfather. I also have a rescue puppy that I adopted named Maisy.

Favorite quote: “Well behaved women rarely make history.” In business you have to continuously think outside of the box to create something unique and truly successful.

What’s playing on your stereo right now? Maroon 5

Activities you enjoy outside of work: I enjoy watching my nephews play football and practicing with them in the front yard on the weekends. Music moves my soul, so any time I can go see live music, I do.

Who has had the greatest influence on you? My grandmother, Thelma Thomson. She taught me how to be a strong Southern woman and how to always honor the values of integrity and respect for myself and others. During her battle with cancer, she never faltered on those principles – always strong, best face forward (including her signature red lipstick) and calm composure to the very end.

What attracted you to RedRover? What attracted me to RedRover was the people. Our CEO, Lori Turner-Wilson, was someone I knew I would learn from. Her reputation and leadership of her team are very valuable and rare. I knew together we could do great things.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment? Creating a national trend collection program for ULTA Beauty. Building the strategy, attending fashion week and working with a celebrity artist to collaborate on the season’s trends were exhilarating experiences. The most fulfilling part of the project, though, came from the overwhelmingly successful sales results generated from our national training and targeted marketing strategy. That’s why I gravitated toward a career at RedRover; like me, this firm is focused on generating tangible results for clients.

If you could give one piece of advice to young people, what would it be? Don’t be in such a hurry to move up the corporate ladder that you skip steps. Many of the greatest learning experiences happen by doing the work and mastering one level before you move to the next. In the long run, you will hone your talent and find greater success.
