Sue-N-The-Lenders group combines real estate, singing

Collectively, Sue Stinson Turner, Lisa Reid and Amy Linthicum have more than a century’s worth of experience in the real estate and banking industries.

But their professional lives are just half of the story. The women are also members of a “taking you through the decades” singing and dancing group called Sue-N-The-Lenders.

“Everybody has a hobby,” said Turner, who leads vocals for the group. “Doing this is kind of my hobby.”

Turner is broker/manager with Crye-Leike Realtors Inc., while Reid and Linthicum are mortgage brokers with Magna Bank, a preferred lending partner of Crye-Leike. Linthicum joined Sue-N-The-Lenders three years ago, after member Jane Hardin retired from Magna.

“Our second partner had to be a lender too or we would have had to change the name,” Reid said with a laugh. “Of course, (Sue-N-The-Lenders) was decided before all of the stuff came out about lenders being awful.”

The history of Sue-N-The-Lenders stems back to 1999, during a Crye-Leike company trip to Pickwick Lake during the middle of the winter.

“We brought a little karaoke machine in for fun because we had been there the year before and there was nothing to do at the state lodge,” Reid said. “There was a little stage with probably 20 Realtors and we started doing YMCA. When everybody went, ‘Y,’ the whole stage collapsed. It kind of brought the party to an end, but that was when we first started singing.”

In their younger years, Turner sang in a band, and Reid and Linthicum played organ in their respective churches.

“Amy and I had musical backgrounds, but we had never really sang,” Reid said. “Honestly, we’ve had to learn how to sing in public. At first, it’s very intimidating. Now, it’s no big deal. I used to never do solos and I do them all of the time now.”

Sue-N-The-Lenders performances have run the gamut from small-scale gatherings like garage sales and senior citizen birthday parties to occasions that drew hundreds, such as the opening of Mirimichi Golf Course in Millington and Memphis Rebounders High Top Parties.

“We go anywhere anybody asks us to come,” Reid said.

But perhaps Sue-N-The-Lenders’ most requested audience, and understandably so, are those in the real estate profession. They’ve done functions for the Memphis Area Association of Realtors, Tennessee Association of Realtors and Women’s Council of Realtors, as well as annual events like the Youth Villages 5K and United Housing Inc.’s Realtor Appreciation Night.

“Anytime there are events in our industry, if we’re asked to do it, we try to do it,” Reid said. “It’s kind of like giving back to everybody. We enjoy doing it.”

Sue-N-The-Lenders tailor their outfits and shows for each occasion. They practice singing and choreography together about once a week, give or take, and know about 130 songs.

Glen Turner, Sue’s husband, is the road manager, and handles everything from sound setup and Facebook marketing to last-minute fake eyelash runs to Walgreens.

They usually stick to 1960s and 1970s tunes, with renditions from girl group favorites like The Supremes and The Temptations. The group has also been known to cover such tracks as “Mamma Mia,” “Leader of the Pack” and “Joy to the World,” and hopes to eventually add Adele to their lineup.

“We have broadened our horizon in the last year and a half a lot,” Reid said. “A lot of show-type songs that have been put in medleys.”

But their signature song is “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey.

“We always kind of end with that because the real estate industry hadn’t been a whole lot of fun the last three or four years,” Linthicum said.
