Benz Repair Shop to Open On Cooper St.

A high-end automobile maintenance and repair shop soon will be added to Cooper-Young’s booming portfolio of local businesses.

Shane Herbers, founder of Midtown Motor Werks, has leased 5,000 square feet at 795 S. Cooper St. from Richard Sullivan.

The shop will focus on Mercedes-Benz but will also service BMW, Land Rover, Porsche and “pretty much any European car,” Herbers said.

A self-described “Mercedes-Benz enthusiast,” Herbers comes from Smith Imports on South Third Street.

“I just noticed that they had so many customers that were willing to drive down to South Memphis to get their car serviced in order to not go to the dealership,” Herbers said. “I had a large following; a lot of those people went there for me to be the one to service their car. I just had to put that right here in the middle of the city.”

Herbers grew up in Midtown and is a firm believer in the area.

“I know everything about it,” Herbers said. “I know every back alley; I used to ride my bike around here. I love the fact that people are walking around and then they’re on their bicycles – this area is just vibrant right now.”

He loves the pedestrian- and bike-friendly district so much he’s going to have a few bikes on hand for customers waiting for their car to get serviced.

“Like some places have loaner cars, well I’m going to have loaner bicycles so that people that don’t want to wait, they can get on a bike, hop down the street, go get some food, go shopping, ride home if they live in the area, and then come back when their car is finished,” he said.

Midtown Motor Werks is shooting for a Monday, March 12, opening, with an official grand opening a few weeks afterward. The shop will have three employees to start and plans to add more as business grows.

“I’ve got so many people that are knocking on the door, they won’t leave me alone,” Herbers said. “They’re like, ‘please, c’mon, I need you.’ They’ve been waiting patiently for a while. People driving by is an advertisement in and of itself. There’s nowhere really in the Midtown area that specializes in Mercedes-Benz. You’ve got Central Gardens, Chickasaw Gardens, different areas of town where people don’t want to have to drive all the way out to Poplar or South Memphis. I believe being here in the neighborhood, it’ll be easy for people to get here and back.”

• In other commercial leasing news, Lighthouse Chapel International has entered into a 63-month-lease for 6,340 square feet of church space from Ephraim Golan at 5796 Shelby Oaks Drive.

Jeff Waddell with Crye-Leike Commercial Inc.’s Arlington Office handled both sides of the transaction.

Also, pool supply company Crown Investment Properties LLC has purchased the 5,944-square-foot warehouse at 6426 Summer Gale Drive from John Conway and Rhonda Conway for $350,000.

Waddell represented the seller. Ed Larkin with Memphis Commercial & Industrial represented the buyer.

• In other retail deals, Utley Properties has closed on a handful of deals in its Elmore Commons at DeSoto Pointe shopping center in Southaven in recent weeks.

Wadfords Grill & Bar has signed a 3,115-square-foot lease at 474 Church Road.

Bambi Fowler, director of marketing and sales and leasing agent with Utley Properties, represented both sides of the deal.

The restaurant, slated for an early April opening, will feature a cigar bar and humidor in addition to its “awesome hamburgers,” Fowler said.

Also, Studio West Salon has signed a 1,571-square-foot lease at 476 Church Road; Cheers Wine and Spirits has leased 1,229 square feet at 478 Church Road; and Super Tans has inked 2,100 square feet at 480 Church Road.

Fowler, who handled both sides of each transaction, said all of the tenants fit nicely in Elmore Commons’ portfolio.

“All of these can go into bigger shopping centers, but this is just a small, little neighborhood strip,” Fowler said. “We’ve got a nail salon there, Domino’s on the end, an eye doctor, a staffing place, finance and insurance companies. It’s a neighborhood center, so everything that’s going in is great for the neighborhood. All I have left is one space and I do have a couple people interested in it.”

• Meanwhile, Sina 2 Inc., doing business as Dunkin’ Donuts, has signed a 2,700-square-foot lease at 5 Stonebridge Place in Jackson, Tenn.

Shawn Massey, partner with The Shopping Center Group LLC, represented the tenant. The landlord, Walter Bryant, represented himself.

“This is a new franchisee for the area,” Massey said. “Dunkin’ is excited to be coming back to the Jackson area and two other stores are planned.”

Also in Jackson, Dot’s Fashions has signed a 4,051-square-foot lease in Centennial Commons Plaza.

Massey represented the tenant, along with The Shopping Center Groups’ Robert Sloan.

Danny Buring, partner with The Shopping Center Group, represented landlord Michael A. Lightman.

This will be the sixth store in the Memphis area, Massey said, and will follow the new store to be open at Ridgeway Trace this spring.
