NASHVILLE (AP) – Republican Kerry Roberts has been sworn in to replace Diane Black in the Tennessee Senate.

Roberts, an accountant and bike store owner, was sworn in Wednesday to represent Senate District 18 after a special election victory over Portland Mayor Ken Wilber, who was unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

Earlier this week, a Tennessee Tea Party e-mail characterized the race as "very close" and urged people to vote for Roberts and otherwise support his bid.

Black, who is also a Republican, was elected to Congress in November. Her seat had been filled on a temporary basis.

Republicans hold a 20-13 majority in the Senate.
