Boyd Appointed to District 7 Council Seat
By Bill Dries
Berlin Boyd, a small-business owner involved in politics for years, is the newest member of the Memphis City Council.
Boyd was appointed to the District 7 council seat Friday morning, July 22, on the third round of voting by the other 12 council members.
He fills the vacancy created by the resignation in June of Barbara Swearengen Ware. She resigned as she took pre-trial diversion on a charge of official misconduct.
Boyd was one of 14 applicants to fill the remaining five months of Ware’s four-year term of office. Nine were nominated by council members for the first two rounds of voting. The third round was effectively a runoff between Boyd and Novella Smith Arnold.
Boyd is partner in a cab company and other businesses. He is not among the 14 candidates on the Oct. 6 Memphis ballot seeking a full four-year term representing District 7.
Boyd, who weighed bids for the state Legislature and the Shelby County Commission in past election cycles, took the oath of office minutes after the council vote was tallied.
