Plans are under way for additional classroom space at Southern College of Optometry.

Linkous Construction Co. Inc. has filed a $7.8 million building permit application with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to add 6,800 square feet of first-floor space and 23,000 square feet of second-floor space, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

The first floor will be a classroom and laboratory area, said Perry Miller, senior project manager with Linkous Construction. The second floor will be an auditorium, classroom and common areas.

“This is a phase one of a multiphase project,” Miller said. “They’ve been planning this for close to a couple of years and they’ve just recently given everybody the green light to go ahead.”

Architectural services will be provided by Memphis-based Formus Inc. Engineering firms involved in the project – all of which are local – include Chad Stewart & Associates Inc. (structural), Haltom Engineering LLC (mechanical), Canup Engineering Inc. (electrical) and Bray-Davis Firm LLC (civil).

Linkous is scheduled to start construction in late spring and complete work in summer of 2013, Miller said.

Phone calls to SCO were not returned. The college is closed for the holidays until Jan. 5.
