Thanksgiving Wine List that Complements Most Feasts
FREDRIC KOEPPEL | Special to The Memphis News
Economy, shmonomy, don’t pretend that the burning question isn’t what wines Yours Truly will be serving with the Thanksgiving feast. So here they are, the same wines that I have offered annually each year of the past five, when we moved to new digs, but the vintages (and the prices) advance. I bought these products at Wine Market; I had gone in to look at the new store (4734 Spottswood) and realized that it would be a good chance to corral the festive vino. I’ll include other stores where these wines are available: remember that prices can vary among stores.

Ridge Three Valleys 2008, Sonoma County. This is a blend of 74 percent zinfandel grapes, 11 percent petite sirah, 5 percent carignane, 4 percent mataro (more commonly called mourvèdre), 3 percent each syrah and grenache. Call it a soulful American version of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Also available at Buster’s Liquors & Wines, 191 S. Highland St.; Poplar Pike Wines & Liquors, 9330 Poplar Pike, Germantown; Forest Hill Wine Merchants, 9087 Poplar Ave., Germantown. About $25.
Trefethen Dry Riesling 2008, Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley. Trefethen’s Dry Riesling is consistently one of the best rieslings made in California. Also available at Buster’s; Forest Hill Wine Merchants; Great Wines & Spirits, 6150 Poplar. About $24.
Domaine Serene Yamhill Cuvée 2007, Willamette Valley, Oregon. What can I say? I love the pinot noirs of Domaine Serene and their beguiling amalgam of satiny elegance and earthy power. Also available at Great Wines & Spirits; and Poplar Wine & Spirits, 2136 West Poplar, Collierville. About $47.
No wine can be all things to all people, but these three pretty much cover the bases as far as the spicy, sweet and savory Thanksgiving dinner is concerned, so have a comfortable, safe, happy one.
