Attorney Edward Stanton is undergoing a final background check to possibly become the new U.S. attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, according to www.mainjustice.com.

The Web site offers news and leads on U.S. Justice Department events and politics.

Career prosecutor Larry Laurenzi has been serving as acting U.S. Attorney since David Kustoff, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, stepped down in May 2008.

Stanton is an attorney at Memphis-based FedEx. He was a candidate in the 2006 Democratic primary for the 9th Congressional District.

Whomever President Barack Obama taps for the job of chief federal prosecutor for the region would then go to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.

The Obama administration has already consulted with 9th District Congressman Steve Cohen on possible appointees. A representative from Cohen’s office told The Daily News they were unaware of any action by the White House.
