Whalum and Webb Draw Opposition At Filing Deadline
By Bill Dries
Memphis school board members Betty Mallott and Martavius Jones were unopposed at Thursday’s filing deadline for the four Memphis school board races on the Nov. 2 ballot, according to a list from the Shelby County Election Commission.
Noon was the deadline for candidates to file their qualifying petitions. Noon on Aug. 26 is the deadline for any candidates to withdraw if they wish. The Shelby County Election Commission will then certify the field of candidates for the ballot.
City school board incumbents Sharon Webb and Kenneth Whalum Jr. each drew challenges at the deadline as they seek election to new four-year terms.
Webb faces four challengers: Regina “Cookie” Drake, David Page, Perry Bond and Cherry Davis.
Whalum has three rivals: Richard Fields, Bob Morgan and Sara Lewis, a former school board member.
