Music Biz Panel To Share Industry Roadmap

Even in a music town like Memphis, it’s hard to find someone with more experience in the business than Mark Montgomery.

Montgomery will give the keynote address at “GRAMMY GPS: A Roadmap For Today’s Music Biz” Friday from noon to 7 p.m. at Playhouse on the Square.

Montgomery founded Echomusic LLC, which developed digital strategies  for major musicians.  IAC, the parent company of Ticketmaster, paid a reported $25 million for a controlling share in Echomusic in 2007.

"I gained a solid understanding of how each area operates. This business is about branding,” Montgomery said. “John Mayer is just like Tide. Your music represents a lifestyle choice. An artist needs to have that disposition.”

The GRAMMY GPS event is an opportunity for local musicians to hear insight from Montgomery and other industry veterans.

“The industry is in a period of dramatic change,” said Jon Hornyak, senior executive director of The Recording Academy-Memphis Chapter. “GRAMMY GPS will help musicians navigate the new musical landscape.”

Other panelists include Jeff Powell (Humongous Productions), artist Al Kapone, Deanie Parker (Soulsville Foundation), David Preston (BMI), Deb Dorsey (Atlantic Records) and Jonathan McHugh (Island/Def Jam), among many others.

Topics include placing music in film, television and video game productions and how to use strategic marketing to manage connections with fans.

“I am really proud of what our chapter has put together,” said Academy president Scott Bomar. “It will be comprehensive and informative for people on all levels of the music business. We have a very impressive group of panelists and some great music showcases.”

The Memphis Chapter of the Recording Academy was founded in 1973 and produces workshops and other educational programs in addition to its industry advocacy role.
