Tenn. Sen. Beavers to Give Up Seat, Run For Mayor
LEBANON, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee Republican Senate Judiciary Chairwoman Mae Beavers says she will run for Wilson County mayor next year instead of seeking re-election to the General Assembly.
Beavers tells The Lebanon Democrat she will run on a platform of improving schools and keeping property taxes low.
Beavers served on the county commission until her election to the state House in 1994, where she became known as a vocal opponent of Republican Gov. Don Sundquist's proposal to impose a state income tax.
She was elected to the Senate in 2002. This year she was the only senator to vote against the state budget plan.
Beavers joins fellow Republican Sen. Tim Burchett in announcing plans to leave the Senate to make a mayoral bid. Burchett is running for Knox County mayor.
