The Daily News and its sister weekly publication, The Memphis News, have joined the growing ranks of companies using Twitter to get their message out.

Anyone can have breaking news about business, politics and the public interest sent straight to their mobile device by following The Daily News on Twitter. Visit www.twitter.com/memphisdaily/ to subscribe, or look for the Twitter link at The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com. Twitter is a free social networking service that allows users to send and receive short updates known as tweets.

Eric Barnes, publisher of The Daily News Publishing Co., said becoming active with Twitter is the first in the company’s plan to establish a presence in the social networking world, helping further connect the company’s news efforts with the community.

“Twitter can be a good outlet for us because we have good content and people can read it on their phones or in different formats,” Barnes said. “Twitter is a nice fit for us and other newspapers. Ultimately, it’s a great way to get interaction with readers, get feedback on stories and get feedback to reporters.”

Every business morning, The Daily News will post three to five news stories on Twitter, including the paper’s daily real estate brief, Hot Property. Updates and breaking news will be sent throughout the day with links to The Daily News and The Memphis News content in each tweet.

And every Wednesday when The Memphis News is posted online, a tweet will be sent alerting followers to its availability.

The Daily News already has a free e-mail edition, which sends links to subscribers every day. Access that feature by visiting The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com, and then entering your name and e-mail address on the home page.

In the coming weeks, look for a blog featuring The Daily News and The Memphis News content, as well as a Facebook page.

“We’ll look at other opportunities where we can get our good content out to people,” Barnes said, “and let them read it the way they want to read it.”
