Voter Registration Increases Leading Up to Feb. 5 Primary
NASHVILLE (AP) - Voter registrations are growing in Tennessee ahead of next month's presidential primary.
Coordinator of Elections Brook Thompson says 84,000 new voters have registered since September.
He called it a sign of healthy growth inspired in part by the 2008 presidential campaign.
Officials will be monitoring the turnout for the Feb. 5 primary during the early voting period that began Wednesday and continues through the end of January.
Thompson said there are about 3.3 million active registered voters in Tennessee. The state's population is just over 6 million.
There are 400,000 inactive voters, who will be purged from the rolls after two federal elections without casting ballots.
About 485,000 people voted in Tennessee's 2004 presidential primary.
