CHATTANOOGA (AP) - Gov. Phil Bredesen says he wants to recruit more quality teachers to the state.

Bredesen has said he will focus on education during his remaining three years in office. He says teacher recruiting is the next step in improving the state's public education system, saying it is more important than trying to get rid of less effective teachers.

One program already in place is Teach Tennessee, which certifies mid-career professionals interested in becoming teachers, especially in the high-needs areas of math, science and foreign language.
