Bush to Visit Memphis
By Andy Meek
President George W. Bush will make a stop in Memphis Monday to attend a fundraising reception for the re-election bid of U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-TN, the White House announced on Friday.
The "Lamar Alexander for Senate and Tennessee Victory Reception" is being held at a private residence Monday afternoon and will be closed to the press. It appears to be the first such fundraiser that Alexander, Tennessee's senior senator, has held in Memphis for his 2008 re-election.
Chatter already has begun to surround the race in the form of speculation on possible opposition to Alexander. One name that has surfaced as a possible Democratic rival is that of Mike McWherter, son of former Tennessee governor Ned McWherter.
Among other events he's scheduled in Memphis on Monday, Alexander will make a speech to students at East High School that morning.
