UTHSC's Netland Honored by American Academy of Ophthalmology

Dr. Peter A. Netland will receive the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology at its annual conference this fall.

Netland, a Siegal Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), is the director of the Glaucoma Service and vice chair for academic affairs for the UTHSC Department of Ophthalmology. He is also the site leader in Memphis for the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus.

Lindsey Cockrell has joined CB Richard Ellis as a marketing specialist. Cockrell has more than three years of experience in commercial real estate. She is a member of the Memphis chapter of the Building Owners and Managers Association and holds a Tennessee real estate broker's license.

Patsy Jones, financial adviser with Shoemaker Financial, has earned a certified financial planner designation. Jones is also a certified public accountant and holds a certified long-term care designation.

Karla Varriano, a teacher at White Station Middle School, was the recipient of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum's Creative Teaching Award. The national competition is open to teachers who teach about Mark Twain in any subject.

Jeremy Ben-David has been named managing director of Alterra Capital Group, a Miami-based real estate investment company with properties in Memphis. He will head the firm's in-house legal department and work with acquisitions, operations and project management. Previously, Ben-David specialized in investment sales and brokerage at Newmark Knight Frank.

Thom Geshay has rejoined Davidson Hotel Company (DHC) as senior vice president of business development. Geshay worked for Davidson for 20 years before leaving to work for Tarsadia Hotels as senior vice president of real estate. Headquartered in Memphis, DHC owns and manages 30 upscale hotels including the Westin, Doubletree, Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton brands.

R. Hunter Humphreys Jr., has joined Glankler Brown PLLC as an associate. Humphreys will concentrate his practice in the areas of commercial and residential real estate transactions and secured lending. He received a juris doctorate in 2005 from the University of Memphis.

Josh Blancett has joined Dan Stewart Realtors as an agent. Blancett previously served as the WREG-TV Channel 3 real estate expert from Crye-Leike Realtors.

Jeff Griffin has been promoted to partner with the law firm of Harris Shelton Hanover Walsh PLLC. Griffin graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in political science and psychology and received a juris doctorate from UT in 2000. His concentration is general civil litigation.

Todd C. Joyner has joined Cadence Bank as vice president and mortgage area manager of the bank's Memphis market. Previously, he served as vice president of mortgage loans for M&F Bank and as mortgage loan officer for Regions Bank. Joyner is a member of the Memphis Mortgage Bankers Association, the Tennessee Mortgage Bankers Association and the Memphis Area Home Builders Association.

Jim Himes has been named general sales manager of WREG-TV Channel 3. Previously, Himes worked in Columbus, Ga., leading that market's ABC affiliate. He also has had stints at MMT in Los Angeles and WGAL Television in Lancaster, Penn.

Meribeth LaBarreare of Magna Bank and Harold Blockman of Crye-Leike Realtors are the recipients of the 2007 Community Service Awards presented by the Memphis Area Association of Realtors. LaBarreare has been involved with Youth Villages for 12 years and Blockman is volunteer chairman of the Youth Villages 5K Sponsorship Committee. Both are tutors through the Memphis City Schools' "Our Children, Our Future" tutoring program.

Roberto Santisteban has joined the Memphis Area Teachers' Credit Union as the Prime Time Housing education counselor. He is a certified bilingual home-buying counselor and has been certified in home-buyer education by Neighbor Works America.

Saia Inc. has named Robert Howard of Bartlett as one of six recipients of the company's 2006-2007 Chairman's Award, which recognizes employees who demonstrate dedication to customer service, their colleagues and the company at large.
