The R.S.V.P. Program is collecting old cell phones for use as 911 emergency phones for senior citizens and victims of domestic abuse. Phones and batteries may be dropped off through Dec. 31 at the Aging Commission of the Mid-South, 2670 Union Extended, Suite 1000. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you have 10 or more phones to drop off, you may call Joanne Lowe at 515-2084 for pickup.

The Giant Rats of Sumatra will meet Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the University Club of Memphis, 1346 Central Ave. The Giant Rats is a Sherlock Holmes discussion group. Reservations are required. The cost is $42. To register, call Joe Highfill at 731-847-4254 by Monday.

The Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library will host an Internet Basics II Class Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. at the library, 3030 Poplar Ave. To register for the class, call 415-2722.

The Desoto Athletic Club will host the first annual DAC New Year’s Eve 10K race Dec. 31 at DAC’s Collierville location, 440 West Powell Road. Registration is available from 7 p.m. to 7:45 a.m. The race will benefit the Page Robbins Adult Day Care Center. Members and nonmembers are eligible to participate. Playhouse on the Square will host its fifth annual New Year’s Eve Gala Dec. 31 at 6 p.m. at Playhouse, 51 S.
