The Memphis Area Association of Realtors (MAAR) Commercial Council sponsors a Commercial Real Estate Environmental Issues Forum Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at MAAR's Martin Edwards Jr. Education Center, 6393 Poplar Ave. Don Bradford, associate principal of EnSafe Inc., is the featured speaker. Topics will include an update on environmental liability management and tools available to manage environmental issues associated with real estate transactions. National Seminars Group presents "The Sales and Use Tax Seminar" Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Select Downtown, 160 Union Ave. The seminar is aimed at accounting and purchasing professionals who want to gain a better understanding of sales and use taxes so they can avoid legal problems, reduce accounting errors and ensure their companies are meeting all their tax obligations. Shelby Residential & Vocational Services hosts "Spirit of SRVS: A Wine/Beer Tasting and Silent Auction" Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Hilton Memphis, 939 Ridge Lake Blvd. The fund-raiser, which will benefit more than 800 developmentally disabled people served by SRVS, will feature wines and beer from around the world, appetizers, music, auctions and more. The Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) is recruiting volunteers for its Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. The program uses volunteers and staff as advocates for residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and residential care homes throughout Shelby, Tipton, Fayette and Lauderdale counties. Initial classroom training for the program will be held Sept. 23 and Sept. 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MIFA headquarters, 910 Vance Ave. For more information, call Linda Marks, Ombudsman volunteer coordinator, at 527-0208, Ext. 230.
