VA Researcher Awarded for
Scientific Achievement
Dr. Andrew H. Kang was presented the William S. Middleton Award, the
Department of Veterans Affairs most prestigious award for scientific
achievement in biomedical research. Kang is a staff physician and researcher
with the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Goodman professor and
director of the University of Tennessee Center of Excellence for Diseases of
Connective Tissue. He previously held the titles of associate chief of staff
for research and development at the Memphis VA Medical Center and chairman of
the UT Department of Medicine.
Krista Osborn was chosen to chair the 25-member Baptist Health
Services Groups 2004 Provider Relations Advisory Committee. Osborn works as
vice president and chief operating officer of Healthcare Asset Management LLC.
Dr. Rosa G. Deal received the Maurelian Medal from Christian
Brothers University. Deal graduated from the University of Naples and has
served for 33 years as a professor of literature and languages at CBU. The
Maurelian Medal is awarded to individuals who have made significant
contributions through service to the university or the community, or to
individuals who have distinguished themselves in the field of education.
Sylvia M. Reed joined the law firm of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC
as an associate in the corporate and securities practice area. Reed previously
worked for Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC. She received
a bachelors degree in accounting from West Virginia University and a law
degree from the West Virginia University College of Law.

H. Lance Forsdick received an honorary doctorate of humane letters
from Christian Brothers University. Forsdick graduated from CBU with a degree
in business administration. The National Council of Christians and Jews named
him Humanitarian of the Year.
Douglas Wilkins, an English teacher at Hamilton High School, was
featured in the spring issue of American Legacy Magazine as an exceptional
teacher of African-American history. Wilkins also was invited to a reception in
the Forbes Gallery in New York City to kick off National Teachers Day.
Marla F. Adair joined the law firm of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC
as an associate in the corporate and securities practice area. Adair previously
worked for Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC. She received
a bachelors degree in psychology from Christian Brothers University and a law
degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law.
University of Memphis
professor David Appleby won a Peabody Award for his film Hoxie: The
First Stand. The film examines the aftermath of the 1954 Brown v. Board of
Education Supreme Court decision. Appleby is a communications professor at the
U of M.

Alumni Association announces the following recipients of its awards for
distinguished research and creative achievement: Dr. Allison Graham, Dr.
Paul Bodin, David Appleby and Dr. Rabi Bhagat.

announced the following associates were named life members of the Multi-Million
Dollar Club: Barbara Garrett, Frances May, Carrie Sweeney,
