The deadline for entry in the seventh annual University of Memphis/Peepers Optical Youth Basketball Tournament is Wednesday The deadline for entry in the seventh annual University of Memphis/Peepers Optical Youth Basketball Tournament is Wednesday. The tournament is Dec. 29. Teams will compete in five boys and five girls divisions based on age and skill level. Entry fees are $55 per team for recreation and school division and $75 for the boys competitive division. For more information, call 678-3475. The Friends of Fort Pillow State Historic Park meeting begins at 2 p.m. Dec. 18. New officers will be elected for the upcoming year. Pet Photos with Santa has been extended one more weekend at Poplar Plaza. Santa will be available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday next to Rite-Aid Pharmacy. The cost is $25 per package. Proceeds from the event go to the Memphis Humane Society. The Memphis Songwriters Association celebrates its silver anniversary with the Songwriter Showcase Awards for 1999 beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at B.B. Kings Club on Beale Street. Memphis songwriters will be given plaques for first, second and third place in eight categories. ``MSA Song of the Year will be given a cash award and the winner in the ``Lyrics Only category will receive a free studio demo. Live entertainment is scheduled for the event. The cover charge is $5. The American Cancer Society golf pass offers 563 rounds of golf with free or reduced greens fees in Tennessee, including 19 courses in Memphis area and 44 courses in West Tennessee. The card is available for $35 for the first and $25 for each additional pass. The pass can be used through the end of 2000. Passes can be ordered by calling 1-800-480-GOLF. ``Once in a Thousand Years, the Memphis Symphony Orchestras New Years Eve Concert and Gala Celebration begins at 7 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Germantown Performing Arts Center. Three Broadway stars will join the symphony for selections from many popular musicals of the century. In addition, Marvell Thomas, son of Rufus Thomas, and his band will provide post-concert entertainment. Tickets are $250. Call the Symphony League Office at 323-0060. An open house is set from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Oakville Health Care Center, 3391 Old Getwell Road. Family and friends are invited to the center for an afternoon of musicians and choirs, as well as carolers. Santa will hear last-minute wishes from children. Refreshments will be served.
