By STACEY PETSCHAUER Eagle Systems provides expertise that others need By STACEY PETSCHAUER The Daily News Getting an early start in the computer industry has opened a lot of doors for A. Ray Scott, president of Memphis-based Eagle Systems Technology Inc. Scott started the information technology staffing service in 1986 and, in the past 13 years, has built his small business into an enterprise that operates in several states and offers an ever-widening range of technology services. The core of the companys work is information technology staffing. Eagle Systems 85 or so employees in Memphis and in Dallas and Austin, Texas, include IT contractors who travel around the country to assist companies with their technology needs. The business employs about 40 people in the Memphis area and is opening its fourth office in July in Denver. "We are in contact with companies throughout the country," Scott said. "These companies have some (IT) resources but not all of the resources they need to perform certain projects. They call on companies like ours to come in and assist them in completing those projects." Businesses that use Eagle Systems contracting services receive technological expertise they dont have in-house but which is necessary for completing programming or other technology projects. Eagle Systems Technology works mainly in the client-server, mid-range and legacy systems, Scott said. While the company has offered the staffing service since the company opened, it recently has been broadening its span of technological services. A newly opened division of Eagle Systems Technology offers Internet services. Now, the company designs, maintains and supports Web sites for other businesses. This service includes registration of domain names, development and maintenance of metatags, and annual maintenance. Eagle Systems also is beginning to develop portals, which operate like Internet advertising boards. So far, the companys focus is on developing portals for the Memphis child care industry. "Lets say someone has a child and theyre looking for a child care center," Scott said. "They can look up Memphis-ChildCare (www.Memphis-ChildCare.com) and see the companies that have subscribed to our services in the Memphis area." Eagle Systems is in the early development stage of this technology, but when the site is in full operation, it will break the Memphis area down into geographical regions, such as Germantown and Midtown, and provide informational listings about each subscribing child care facility. The company also plans to create similar portals for attorneys, certified public accountants and for the transportation and distribution industry, Scott said. "Were still in the development stage of this, but thats the intention," he said. Scott, whose background is in information technology, said he went into business for himself by default. "The company I was working for back in 1986 did some re-engineering. I got pulled into that and found I had an opportunity to start my own business," he said.
