Fred's Inc names Reier president John Reier has been named president of Freds Inc., effective May 1. He formerly was president and chief operating officer at Family Dollar Stores Inc. Reier also previously served as senior vice president of merchandise and advertising for Freds. Stephen P. Miller has joined the law firm of McDonald Kuhn as an associate. He was formerly associated with Sedgwick Inc. Kathi Rowzie has been promoted to public relations director for Chandler, Ehrlich & Co. She joined the agency in October as senior public relations manager and formerly operated Rowzie Public Relations. TBC Corp. has announced an expansion of its field sales department. Gary M. Paulson was named national sales director. He formerly was national sales manager. Paulson is a graduate of the University of Georgia. Jon Ramsey was named regional sales manager for TBCs Eastern Region. Ramsey joined the company in March and formerly worked for Continental/General Tire as national manager of commercial product sales for Mexico. He is a graduate of Moravian College. J.B. Bates III was appointed authorized dealer sales representative. Bates has been with TBC since 1995 and is a graduate of Southwest Baptist University. Thompson & Co. announced three new employees. Patsy Bailey has been named accounting manager. She formerly was director of accounting and office manager for the Rutland Group. Bailey is a graduate of Shelby State Community College. Deborah Coble has been hired as a vice president and account supervisor. She formerly was director of marketing for network development with Baptist & Physicians. She is a graduate of the University of Memphis. Neely Pemberton has been named creative strategist. She formerly was public relations administrator for Cellular One/GTE Wireless. She is a graduate of Millsaps College. Philip Babin, director of corporate tax for Perkins Family Restaurants, received the companys Field Service Award during the chains recent management conference. James H. Daughdrill Jr. is the 1999 recipient of the Major Gift Laureate Award from the Institute of Charitable Giving. The University of Memphis has named five recipients of its 1999 Alumni Association Distinguished Research Awards: theater professor Gloria Baxter, mathematics professor Dr. George Anastassiou, psychology professor Dr. Bruce Bracken and philosophy professors Dr. Terence Horgan and Dr. John Tienson.
