The Shining Star contest, sponsored by Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation and First Tennessee Bank, is taking nominations of extraordinary children residing in Memphis and Shelby County to be honored at the 1998 Baptist Kids Festival on Sept The Shining Star contest, sponsored by Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation and First Tennessee Bank, is taking nominations of extraordinary children residing in Memphis and Shelby County to be honored at the 1998 Baptist Kids Festival on Sept. 19. The deadline for nominations is June 1. The nominees should be children who have risen above normal expectations, overcome a hardship and demonstrated good citizenship through integrity, responsibility and acts of kindness. There are four age categories for girls and boys, for a total of eight categories, which are: first through third grade, fourth through sixth grade, seventh through ninth grade and 10th through 12th grade. The eight winners will each receive four tickets to the Baptist Kids Festival and a $100 savings bond, and the schools they attend will be awarded a $250 check for the purchase of educational resources. The Baptist Kids Festival will be held at the Hutchison School, 1740 Ridgeway. The Memphis and Shelby County 18th annual Senior Expo will be held May 20 at the Cook Convention Center from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $6. The Memphis/Shelby County Public Library will hold its Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale on June 4-7 in the Charles Brakefield/Youth Building at the Mid-South Fairgrounds. A preview sale will be held for Friends members only on June 4 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Memberships may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 725-8852. The book sale will open to the general public on June 5-7 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is free. Featured at the book sale will be thousands of hardback and paperback fiction books, mysteries, romances and biographies. Also available will be cookbooks, art books, encyclopedias, children's books, records and videotapes. For more information, call Andrea Harris at 725-8852. The Memphis Human Society will hold a "Flea Fair" and bake sale Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Chickasaw Oaks Plaza, 3088 Poplar Ave. The cost is $1. A preview party will be held today from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Admission to the preview party is $5. To donate items, call 272-1753.
