Quebecor to expand,
modernize local plant
Quebecor Printing (USA) Corp., the nation's second largest printer, announced Monday a major expansion and modernization project for its Memphis printing plant.
The 105,000-square-foot addition will increase the size of the facility by 83 percent. The expansion will accommodate installing new gravure presses and related equipment that will enhance its retail insert printing facilities.
Total investment in the project could top $100 million and new jobs will be created when the two-year project is completed in late 1999.
"This expansion is a key part of our plan to offer our customers a superior network of retail insert production facilities," said James A. Dawson, president and chief executive officer of Quebecor Printing (USA) Corp.
"The equipment we are installing here will give our customers unique benefits in terms of schedule compression, production efficiencies and quality. This technology will enable our company, and the Memphis plant, to grow our business as we enter the 21st century."
Quebecor Printing Memphis, located at 828 East Holmes Road, currently employs 230 people in a 126,500-square-foot facility. Employment at the facility already has increased 25 percent in the last year with the addition of about 50 employees, in part due to the pending expansion of the plant.
The plant produces retail advertising inserts for retail chains that are distributed in newspapers and stores nationwide. It supplies Sears, which recently signed a contract with Quebecor Printing (USA) Corp.
The plant, part of the Quebecor retail group, was acquired by Quebecor in 1990. It is one of eight Quebecor printing facilities in Tennessee which together employ more than 4,500. Quebecor also recently opened a corporate services office in Nashville.
Quebecor Printing (USA) Corp., headquartered in Boston, operates 51 printing and related media services facilities and has approximately 16,500 employees in 31 states. Quebecor Printing (USA) Corp. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Quebecor Printing Inc., which has more than 27,000 employees working in more than 115 printing and related services plants in the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Chile, Argentina, Mexico and India.
