Kmart on Summer Avenue gets new look, new name Kmart on Summer Avenue gets new look, new name By SUZANNE THOMPSON The Daily News Renovations have begun on the Kmart store at 5124 Summer Ave., and the store will get a new name, "Big Kmart," to go along with its face lift. General manager Karen Worful said the new Big Kmart sign will be erected in mid-March. She said the changes to the store's interior include bigger aisles and the addition of seven 70-foot counters for storing grocery items. She said the store also will have coolers with frozen goods and a dairy section but will not stock produce or seafood. Worful said, while the Super Kmart stores appeal more to families with 2.5 children, the Big Kmart store's target singles and elderly. The strategy behind the Big Kmart stores is to encourage people to stop in and shop more often, because they will not have to walk so far and fight crowds. "They want to be able to still come to their local Kmart but have all the conveniences of the '90s, without having to be just totally lost in a 150,000-square-foot building," she said. Worful said plans include relocating the merchandise in the store, as well. "The whole concept is to bring our hot, Martha Stewart line up to the front of the store. Domestics is now the first thing you see when you walk in," she said. Construction began two weeks ago, said Kevin Carmody, project coordinator for Greg Construction Co., the Michigan-based contractor handling the renovations for Kmart. He said construction is expected to be complete by April 1. Carmody said two stockrooms were removed to add approximately 1,000 square feet of additional sales space. "Every counter in the building is being relocated and changed to give it a whole new fresh look," Carmody said. He said the entire interior and exterior of the building will get a fresh coat of paint. Dan Jarvis, media relations specialist for Kmart, said the company is changing all the traditional Kmart stores to Big Ks. The Super Kmart stores are operated under a separate division of Kmart Corp., he said. "We're basically revamping all of our stores (in the Mid-South)," Jarvis said. Of the approximately 2,100 stores nationwide, 500 stores were renovated last year and renovations on 450 more are expected to be complete by the end of the year. Jarvis said by the end of 1999 renovations on all traditional stores should be complete. Super Kmart stores replaced two of the other Kmart stores in Memphis  on Winchester Road and Austin Peay Highway. Jarvis said it is unusual for a city to have two Super Kmart stores. Kmart Corp. is based in Troy, Mich. The company's stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol KM. It closed Monday at ____, up/down ____.
