1939 S Third 381090000 MEM (null) (null)(null) Public Library 1850 Peabody 381040000 (null) Wells Construction Corp CH Library Library construction starts at Southgate Mall By CAMILLE H. GAMBLE The Daily News Construction has started on renovations to 1939 S. Third St. in Southgate Mall, which soon will be the new home of the South branch of the Memphis and Shelby County Public Library. The South branch library now is located at 185 E. Norwood, two blocks from the new location. Daphne Thomas, library news coordinator, said the branch will double in size with the move from 6,000 square feet to more than 14,000 square feet. ìThe new branch will be in a retail outlet, and we thought it would be convenient for library customers,î Thomas said. ìWhile they are shopping, they can stop in to the library and handle their library needs. We just thought it would be a good idea to put a branch library in a retail area.î Thomas said funding for the construction of the new branch will come from the Branch Library Improvement Budget which is funded by the city and county. Thomas said the library has signed a 25-year lease for the new space. The old building on Norwood is owned by the city, she said. The new space is being totally renovated to accommodate the new branch. Wells Construction Corp. is the general contractor on the construction project, which is valued at $612,000, according to a building permit issued last week by the Shelby County Construction Code Enforcement Office. Features of the new library include a large reading room, glass-block interior walls, round circulation desk, childrenís area, meeting rooms and offices, said Allen Wagner, project manager with Wells Construction Corp. ìWith I was with Omega General Contractors, I built the North branch library, and the look of this building will be similar to that one,î Wagner said. Nathan Evans Taylor Coleman is the architect on the new Third Street library project. Wagner said subcontractors include Reliant Electric, Herin & Co., Stagg Construction and Bennie Krag Plumbing.
