92 prisoners from Tennessee have received the death penalty since 1978. 92 prisoners from Tennessee have received the death penalty since 1978. Twenty-nine prisoners who were sentenced in Shelby County are "officially" on death row. That number does not include two inmates whose paperwork has not come through, although they are physically on death row, making the physical death row count 31. One woman is among the 31 prisoners on death row in Tennessee. Gail Owens was sentenced in 1981 after she was convicted of hiring her husbands murder. A sentencing statute which went into effect in the summer of 1995 allows jurors a third sentencing option besides life in prison and death life in prison without parole.
