Trolley Lines Return Comes With Technology, Standards Changes -

New trolleys the Memphis Area Transit Authority hopes to have back on the Main Street tracks by the end of this year may sneak up on Main Street Mall pedestrians.
The new trolley car 799 that MATA officials took on a two-block test drive last week sounded much quieter than the fleet of trolleys that came off the tracks more than three years ago. They were taken out of service when two trolleys caught fire and new leadership at MATA discovered there were few maintenance records, no maintenance program and very little training for the upkeep of the system.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center will host Line Dancing for BLUES, in recognition of Infant Mortality Awareness Month, on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the student alumni center, 800 Madison Ave. The event will include a line dance-a-thon, and information on infant mortality and the BLUES Project. The Memphis Fisk Alumni Club will host the General Alumni Association’s southern regional conference Friday, Sept. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 18, at The Peabody hotel, 149 Union Ave. The conference will begin Friday from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with the premiere of the documentary “Last Championship Teams.” Workshops will be held throughout Saturday. Also on Saturday, a philanthropy luncheon will be held at 12:30 p.m. and a black-tie dinner benefit at 7 p.m. The luncheon and dinner are open to the public. Call 230-5568 or email alumni@fisk.edu.
