1. DIY Pizza Craze -

For decades the “Big Three” – Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Papa John’s – have dominated the pizza industry, but the fast-casual dining concept is changing that.

And one of the new players disrupting the industry is PizzaRev, a fast-casual pizza restaurant with three locations in Memphis.

2. Babalu Taps GM, Chef for New East Memphis Location -

Babalu Tapas and Tacos has named a general manager and an executive chef for its new East Memphis location at 6450 Poplar Ave., which is expected to open in April.

PizzaRev will hold a grand opening for its first Memphis location Thursday, Jan. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at 6450 Poplar Ave., suite 119. Thursday will be a pay-what-you-want fundraiser for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital; customers can pay what they want for a personal pizza, with all funds being donated to the hospital. The national build-your-own artisanal pizza concept PizzaRev is holding a grand opening this week for the first of three Memphis franchise locations, and the event will double as a fundraiser for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

The Yard will recycle Christmas trees free of charge through Jan. 29 at its recycling and composting facility, 1735 Thomas Road. The Fourth Bluff Ice Rink in Mississippi River Park Downtown will host live music by Marcella Simien of Marcella & Her Lovers Friday, Dec. 23, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. In addition, Santa’s elves will make visits each day through Saturday, Dec. 24. 18. Real Estate Awakening -

The year’s biggest office deal didn’t affect Memphis’ office absorption at all, but everyone in real estate has felt its reverberations.

When ServiceMaster Global Holdings announced its move to the shuttered Peabody Place Mall from Ridge Lake office park, it promised new life for a 328,000-square-foot black hole in Downtown’s retail market.

19. New Restaurant Opening Soon in East Memphis -

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, the fast-casual restaurant Pimento’s Kitchen + Market will open in East Memphis for breakfast, lunch and dinner at 6450 Poplar Ave.

20. Last Word: Big River Weekend, Buying Local and The Rehabilitation of Lane Kiffin -

The city’s riverfront will be a very busy place Saturday with several events – the one getting the most attention is the opening of the Big River Crossing – the bicycle and pedestrian boardwalk across the Mississippi River on the north side of the Harahan Bridge.

23. Last Word: Greg Davis Gets A New Trial, Overton Park Compromise Done and Tesla -

The one-time mayor of Southaven is getting a new trial on embezzlement charges.

A Mississippi Appeals court agreed Tuesday with attorneys for Greg Davis, who argued he could not get a fair trial in DeSoto County on the felony charges because of pre-trial publicity.

24. New Center to Capitalize on Strong Retail Demand -

The shopping center at 6450 Poplar Ave. is fully constructed with tenants opening as soon as next month.

25. New Hotel Planned for Downtown Memphis -

Two Ohio-based development firms plan to build a new hotel on a vacant site in Downtown Memphis.

The Orlean Co. of Beachwood, Ohio, and Ceres Development LLC of Westlake, Ohio, plan on building a Cambria Suites on a 3.3-acre lot on the south side of Union across from Fourth Street, just west of Danny Thomas Boulevard.

26. Wave of New Retail Construction Boosts Contractors -

Retail development in the Memphis area is booming in what construction and retail officials describe as the most active period for retail construction since the recession, with everything from a massive outlet mall in Southaven to grocery stores and smaller, traditional retail centers going up.
