4. Edge Alley Sets Opening Date -

Edge Alley, the Medical District’s new coffee house/micro-retail incubator, has officially set an opening date – Wednesday, July 26, at 7 a.m.

In addition to offering food, coffee and much-needed common space to the Medical District’s Edge neighborhood, the Edge Alley – located at 600 Monroe Ave. next to High Cotton Brewing Co. – will house four roughly 225-square-foot micro-retail bays with the intention of helping the fledgling businesses transition into a large site.

5. New City & State Location Highlights Medical District Upswing -

Come next spring, the Broad Avenue Arts District coffee and retail venture City & State is expanding to the Memphis Medical District.

Co-owner Lisa Toro said she and her husband, Luis, had always planned to take the concept beyond Broad Avenue, it was just a matter of figuring out what area represented the best fit. Turns out the Medical District – where City & State has signed a letter of intent for 3,500 square feet at 421 Monroe Ave. – checked that box.

6. City & State Plans Location in Memphis Medical District -

A new City & State location is coming to the Medical District next year, with the planned opening roughly coinciding with the three-year anniversary of the combination coffee and retail venture that first opened in the Broad Avenue Arts District in early 2015.

7. Freewheel Comes Full-Circle for Second Season -

Freewheel, the Memphis Medical District Collaborative’s slow ride bicycle program announced it’s returning for a second season which begins on April 19.

The rides, which will take place every Wednesday for six consecutive weeks, provide a free opportunity to casually explore neighborhoods by bike and learn more about the Medical District’s new and existing hidden treasures.

Party at the Plaza, a kickoff party for a yearlong art installation by Cat Peña, will be held Thursday, March 9, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the plaza at 600 Monroe Ave. (at Marshall Avenue). Hosted by the Memphis Medical District Collaborative, The Edge District and Downtown Memphis Commission, the party will include live music by John Paul Keith, beer from High Cotton Brewing, and more. More than 140 artists from all over the world will collaborate to paint both sides of the 0.3-mile wall with graffiti art. 26. Medical District Slow Rides Begin Next Week -

The Memphis Medical District Collaborative will host its first district-wide bike rides next Wednesday.

The new program, called Freewheel, is a group bicycle ride with a focus on community. The casual rides are free and people are invited to bring their own bikes or borrow one from MMDC’s fleet.

The Mississippi River at Memphis crested and then it rained.
The weekend rain added about two-tenths of an inch by Saturday to Friday’s crest.

Memphis City Council members discuss and could vote Tuesday, March 17, on a restructuring of the city’s debt payments.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. has proposed the restructuring to delay a balloon payment in 2020 that would see the city’s annual payment go from $15 million the year before to $30 million in that fiscal year.

In the last five years, the 600 computers in the Memphis Public Library & Information Center were used 1.2 million times.

In that same five years, the budget for the library system of 18 locations has been cut 21 percent and there has been a 20 percent reduction in hours over the same five years.

Details: Warrendale, Pa.-based Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc. has bought three parcels in Rivergate Industrial Park from Belz Investco GP for $3.7 million. The deal closed May 31. The first parcel is 9.3 acres on the north side of Riverport Road (listed in the deed as Rivergate Road). It backs McKellar Lake, and the Shelby County Assessor of Property’s 2011 appraisal is $419,000. The second parcel is 63 acres on the south side of Riverport Road, appraised at $604,600. The third parcel is 113.9 acres on the north side of Riverport Road, wrapping around the 9.3-acre parcel and including an offshoot of McKellar Lake. Its 2011 appraisal is $769,600.
MEPPI announced in mid-February it would build a $200 million transformer manufacturing plant in Belz Enterprises Inc.-owned Rivergate Industrial Park.
In March, the Shelby County Commission and Memphis City Council each put in $1 million toward infrastructure financing for the project.

Taking advantage of increased holiday travel, Memphis-based Pinnacle Airlines Corp. saw solid passenger activity for its three subsidiaries in November, the company announced Tuesday.

42. Evolve Systems Grows Memphis Location -

Evolve Digital Media has more than doubled its Memphis location at Apple Tree Center in Hickory Hill.

The Memphis-based company expanded its lease from 2,520 to 6,327 square feet at 6073 Mount Moriah Road Extended. Tyler Tapley, associate with CB Richard Ellis Memphis, represented the landlord, Apple Tree Center Partnership.

Jim’s Place restaurant was founded Downtown in 1921. Eighty-nine years later, the Taras family still owns Jim’s Place East, on Shelby Oaks Drive, and Jim’s Place Grille, in Collierville, though a major change is coming for Jim’s Place East in the next few months.
