Riverfront Fireworks Spectacular will take place Monday, July 4, at Mud Island River Park, 125 N. When the city of Memphis got an unmistakable warning in May 2013 from Tennessee comptroller Justin Wilson to get its financial house in order, Memphis mayor A C Wharton was among those quick to caution against likening the city’s problems to those of Detroit.

7. Sales Tax Hike Early Voting Expands -

Early voting in the last elections of 2013 expands Tuesday, Nov. 12, to 15 satellite voting sites across Memphis.

The early voting period, underway since Nov. 1 and ending Nov. 16, is for the only citywide election of an unusually busy political year that has featured 11 elections in three months.

8. Schools Consolidation Early Voting Tops 2K -

Early voting in advance of the March 8 election day topped 2,000 through Saturday – 2,161 to be exact.

Both sides of the schools consolidation question on the ballot worked to rally voters over the weekend as early voting expanded Saturday to sites across the city.
