Say what you want about the kind of city Memphis is or isn’t for foodies who prefer originality to the chains and knockoffs that are so familiar a sight in suburbia. But let it be known that 2017 was another year of ascendancy for Memphis’ singular, distinctive food scene, with the constant arrival of new concepts and experiences that in turn also says something about the city that patronizes those establishments.

A new taco restaurant from the owners of Belly Acres is coming to 3295 Poplar Ave.

Tennessee Taco Co., owned by Ben McLean and chef Rob Ray, is set to open Monday, Sept. 11. Located at Poplar and Holmes Road, the restaurant will feature 24 kinds of street tacos, with menu options encompassing tastes that range from a preference for beef to chicken, pork and fish.

4. Belly Acres Co-Owners Open New Concept -

Ben McLean, co-owner of the Overton Square burger restaurant Belly Acres, has been thinking about expanding his Memphis-area restaurant interests for a few years now.

Start Co. will offer small-business mentoring sessions Tuesday, April 5, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Ave. This free program offers one-on-one counseling about starting or managing a small business. Visit memphislibrary.org for details.

Germantown Community Library will host Night of the Doctor on Monday, April 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at GCL, 1925 Exeter Road. Join fellow Whovians for an evening of Doctor Who-themed events and crafts for children, teens and adults. Dress up and arrive at 6:15 to participate in the costume contest. 8. Renovation, Expansion Underway at Saddle Creek -

The Shops at Saddle Creek has picked up a new tenant as the lifestyle center undergoes a renovation.

Marmi Shoes has leased 1,395 square feet between Vera Bradley and Madewell at Saddle Creek. St. Louis-based Marmi Shoes offers a wide variety of women’s shoe styles and sizes with a European influence. The Saddle Creek location, the first in the Memphis area and the second in Tennessee, is expected to open in the fall.

9. Sales Tax Hike Early Voting Expands -

Early voting in the last elections of 2013 expands Tuesday, Nov. 12, to 15 satellite voting sites across Memphis.

The early voting period, underway since Nov. 1 and ending Nov. 16, is for the only citywide election of an unusually busy political year that has featured 11 elections in three months.

10. Early Voting Expands in State House Dist. 98 Primary -

Early voting in the special primary election for State House district 98 has expanded from Shelby County Election Commission headquarters at 157 Poplar Ave. to two satellite locations.

11. Early Voting Kicks Off for Vacant District 98 Seat -

Here comes the new election year. Early voting opens Tuesday in the special election primaries for state House District 98. Election Day is Jan. 20.

The seat representing North Memphis, Frayser and Raleigh became vacant with the November death of Democratic state Rep. Ulysses Jones Jr.

The Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence will present a workshop titled “Focus … Organization … Productivity” today from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Alliance Office, 5100 Poplar Ave., Suite 502. Maryanne Macdonald, director of professional and continuing education at the University of Memphis, will lead the workshop. The Engineers’ Club of Memphis Inc. will hold its weekly meeting and lunch today at 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis, 3700 Central Ave. Mark Lindstrom of ETI Corp. will present “Greenways and Trails.” Cost is $14. No reservations are required.

14. Costa Vida to Open Two Eateries in Memphis -      Costa Vida Fresh Mexican Grill is opening two restaurants in Memphis Aug. 3. The Salt Lake City-based Costa Vida will open at 3295 Poplar Ave. in Midtown and at 1250 N. Germantown Parkway in Cordova.
